Dr. John Uche, MD - Shelby, NC

At Hopscotch Primary Care, we believe that seniors in small towns deserve healthcare that is simple and accessible. That is why we are excited to welcome Dr. John Uche, MD., the new Medical Director at our Shelby clinic. With decades of experience in family medicine and a passion for caring for underserved communities, Dr. Uche brings both skill and heart to his role.

A Journey Shaped by Service

Dr. Uche’s path into medicine began early in life. Growing up in Nigeria, he was one of the top students in his class. At the time, the career options for high-achieving students were clear: medicine, engineering, or law. For him, medicine became the path forward.

“Back in Nigeria, most of the folks who were top students in high school had limited places to go. You mainly had medicine, engineering, or law, as top priorities. I happened to be one of the best students in my class at that time, so by 18 years old I was in medical school. Though my mother passing away from complications of trauma when I was in elementary school helped tip the scale”

What began as an academic path became a true calling once he started caring for patients. “It was later that I began to really have more insight into why this was a good choice for the rest of my life,” he shared.

After completing medical school in Nigeria, he practiced family medicine before moving to the United States for further training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. That experience had a profound effect on him.

“We were exposed to a lot of people who had limited means of accessing healthcare. Many did not have medical insurance; some were underinsured, and we had to manage the available resources to provide the best care for these vulnerable patients. That experience of having to take care of people who otherwise could not take care of their own healthcare made me a champion for underserved care. Since then, that’s how I came to know that it was the right decision I had taken many years prior.”

Building a Career in Value-Based Care

From Chicago, Dr. Uche’s journey took him to Ohio, where he joined the University of Toledo Medical Center as a faculty member in the Family Medicine Department. After a few years, he transitioned to working at a Federally Qualified Health Center, serving patients who faced many barriers to care. The experience allowed him to care for patients facing significant barriers to healthcare and deepened his commitment to underserved communities.

While the work was meaningful, it also sparked a question for him: was there another model of care that could better support both patients and providers?

That curiosity eventually led him to value-based care organizations focused on serving seniors.

Later, a conversation with a member of the Hopscotch team opened the door to a new opportunity.

Value-based care is a model of healthcare that focuses on keeping patients healthy rather than simply treating illness. Instead of rushing through visits, care teams spend more time with patients, help manage chronic conditions, and work to prevent hospital visits whenever possible.

Why Hopscotch, Why Shelby

Today, Dr. Uche is leading the Shelby clinic with the same passion that has guided him since his early training. What excites him most is the opportunity to work with a dedicated team to bring value-based care to seniors in a small-town setting.

“I love value-based care myself. It is good for the patient and it is good for the provider and the team. My role is to help people really understand what value-based care is and how we can implement it to take care of our patients, most of whom are underserved. I am in the area where I really love to be.”

For him, success is about teamwork.

Caring for Seniors in Shelby

In just a short time, Shelby has shown Dr. Uche the unique challenges and rewards of small-town mall-town healthcare.

“As close as Shelby is to Charlotte, it is still an underserved community. Many of the resources available in Charlotte are not available here. Some specialties are not here, so patients have to go to Gastonia or Charlotte for some specialty care. Many patients also have difficulty affording medications, so we use patient assistance programs to help them.”

Transportation can sometimes be a challenge for seniors in rural communities. Dr. Uche says one thing he appreciates about Hopscotch is how the team works to help patients navigate those barriers.

Even when challenges arise, he is enthusiastic about supporting patients and is inspired by the opportunity to help others. “My goal is to reduce the number of times patients have to go to the emergency department or hospital. That is what makes it joyful for me.”

Life Beyond the Clinic

When he is not caring for patients, Dr. Uche treasures time with his family. He and his wife, a pharmacist, have three children, and he enjoys spending weekends at home with them.

“I like to enjoy my family. We play a lot of games; I play a lot of Scrabble with my wife. We take walks in the neighborhood when we are able. I am a super fan of soccer, so I watch a lot of soccer as well. And when we can, we also like to travel. We love to go to any other part of America or the world, and have some fun.”

He is a proud supporter of Chelsea Football Club in England, and his favorite trip so far was to London, where he visited Windsor and saw the Queen’s Palace.

For patients wondering about fun facts, Dr. Uche is also a cook at heart. “I like to think of myself as a good cook,” he said. His specialty is fufu, a traditional Nigerian dish eaten with a variety of soups. “It is a favorite dish in Nigeria and all of West Africa. I have continued to like it even after many years here in the U.S.”

A Message to Shelby Seniors

As Medical Director, Dr. Uche wants seniors in Shelby to know that Hopscotch is here for you.

“We are here to take care of you. We have the tools to support what we do, and our goal is to keep you healthy and happy and to spend your time in your own home enjoying a high quality of life. Our goal is to prevent, whenever possible, visits to the emergency department or admission to the hospital. Whatever we can do as a team, which includes you (our patients), we will do to provide the best care and the best quality of life possible given your conditions. I also want you to know that we are always available for you 24/7/365. You can call us anytime if you need anything.”
