Hopscotch Primary Care Hurricane Helene Community Response

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, our communities in Western North Carolina faced significant challenges. Many of our Hopscotch Primary Care clinics were temporarily closed, yet our teams rose to the occasion, embodying the spirit of compassion and dedication that defines our mission to care for seniors on Medicare. We want to take a moment to share the incredible relief efforts and heartwarming stories that emerged during this time of need.

From the outset, our staff worked tirelessly to ensure that our patients received uninterrupted care. Our dedicated team members gathered essential supplies, creating a donation table for patients and their families. As one staff member recounted, “Patients have taken what they needed, and some even brought additional items like diapers and formula to share.” This communal spirit turned a simple supply table into a lifeline for many.

Dr. Smith, one of our compassionate physicians, exemplified selflessness in her response to the crisis. She rallied her friends to raise funds, ultimately donating over 20 generators to those in the Boone area. Not only did she contribute to the community, but she also coordinated with an electrician to ensure safe installation. While she remained behind the scenes, her actions spoke volumes about the profound impact one individual can make.

Our team also went above and beyond to check on our most vulnerable patients. One visually impaired patient reached out after two days without power, realizing only when he smelled rotten food that he was in need. Our team swiftly delivered water and easy-to-cook food, and even connected him with neighbors who were volunteering to help others in the complex. This simple act of kindness reminded us that community is about looking out for one another.

In another remarkable story, a visually impaired patient faced dire circumstances when her main road washed away. Fearing she wouldn’t be able to use her oxygen at night, she called us in distress. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of her neighbor and our dedicated team member, they coordinated a rescue helicopter, ensuring she received the care she needed.

Throughout this challenging period, our internal communications kept the team connected and focused. We are grateful to report that no serious injuries were reported, and all staff were accounted for in the first few days following Hurricane Helene. Within two weeks of the hurricane, all locations were fully operational, with our teams prioritizing those in greatest need. Telehealth became a vital part of our efforts, allowing us to check in on patients and coordinate care effectively—even doing home visits when necessary and able.

As we reflect on our response to Hurricane Helene, we celebrate the unwavering commitment of our Hopscotch family. The resilience, compassion, and teamwork displayed during this crisis have truly tugged at our heartstrings. Together, we are not just a healthcare provider; we are a community dedicated to lifting each other up in times of need.

Thank you to all our staff members for your resilience, to our patients for your trust, and to the community for your incredible support. Together, we will continue to thrive and care for one another, no matter the challenges we face.
