At Hopscotch Primary Care, we know that exceptional patient care starts with a passionate, dedicated team. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce Morgan White, one of our newest Medical Assistants, whose journey into healthcare and experience with Hopscotch perfectly embodies our mission.

We sat down with Morgan to learn more about her path to becoming a Medical Assistant, what brought her to Hopscotch, and what makes her role so rewarding.

A Passion for Patient Care

Morgan’s journey into healthcare began years ago when she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

“I worked as a CNA for what felt like 100 years,” she joked. “I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field, but I also wanted to grow in my career. Becoming a Medical Assistant felt like the next natural step.”

Through a 12-month on-the-job training program at a federally qualified health center (FQHC), Morgan gained the hands-on experience needed to earn her certification and officially step into the Medical Assistant role.

Why Hopscotch? A Personal Connection

Morgan’s introduction to Hopscotch Primary Care was deeply personal—she first walked through our doors as a family member of a patient.

“My grandmother is a patient at Hopscotch, and I went with her to an appointment. The provider, Chuck, started asking me about her medical history, and at some point, he just looked at me and said, ‘Wait, where do you work? What’s your background?’”

When she mentioned she was a Medical Assistant, he immediately encouraged her to apply. But for Morgan, the decision to join Hopscotch wasn’t just about a job—it was about the exceptional care she witnessed firsthand.

“They treated my grandmother with such kindness and respect, without even knowing who I was. That’s when I knew—this was the kind of place I wanted to be a part of.”

Serving the Rural Community

One of the key reasons Morgan was drawn to Hopscotch is our mission to serve rural communities.

“I was born and raised in a small town in Western North Carolina, so I know how hard it can be for people in rural areas to access care. Many won’t drive 20 minutes to a doctor’s office. The fact that Hopscotch brings high-quality care to them is just incredible.”

Her deep appreciation for the elderly population—fostered through years of experience in geriatrics, hospice, and long-term care—makes her role even more fulfilling.

“They tell you how it is. They are who they are, and they’ve built the world we live in. I love being able to give back to them.”

Jumping Right In: A Unique First Day

Morgan’s first week at Hopscotch was anything but ordinary.

“On my second day, the Medical Assistant who was supposed to train me had a sick child and couldn’t come in. I didn’t know the system yet, but I knew how to be a Medical Assistant. I saw patients waiting and thought, ‘There’s no reason they should be sitting there.’ So, I just got to work.”

That initiative and problem-solving mindset shaped her experience at Hopscotch. With the support of her team, she helped refine workflows, organized supplies, and created a system that improved efficiency for both staff and patients.

“The providers here truly listen. If I suggest something to improve workflow, they say, ‘Try it! We’ll never know unless we do.’ That kind of collaboration is rare, and it makes all the difference.”

A Day in the Life: Making a Real Impact

So, what does a typical day look like for a Medical Assistant at Hopscotch? According to Morgan, every day is different—but that’s what makes it exciting.

She starts the morning by greeting her team and preparing for the day’s patients. From taking vitals and listening to patient concerns to handling medication refills, prior authorizations, and lab work, her role is multifaceted.

“You don’t just clock in and out here. You are valued. Everyone is. When you walk in, you’re greeted with smiles and support. It makes all the difference in how we care for our patients.”

Advice for Aspiring Medical Assistants

For those considering a career as a Medical Assistant, Morgan’s advice is simple: make sure your heart is in the right place.

“Don’t do this for the paycheck. Don’t do it because it seems like a good fit. Do it because you genuinely care. When we walk through these doors, we give everything we have to our patients, and they know if you’re not fully invested.”

She also emphasizes the importance of listening.

“My grandmother always told me, ‘You have two ears and one mouth for a reason—to listen twice as much as you speak.’ These patients have decades of medical history. You need to sit down and hear them.”

Looking Ahead: Growth and Opportunity at Hopscotch

Morgan has big goals for her future—she aspires to become a nurse and is confident that Hopscotch will support her along the way.

“Hopscotch is a place where you can grow. The providers and leadership truly support career advancement, whether it’s continuing education or moving into a new role.”

But beyond career growth, it’s the culture of family and support that makes Hopscotch special.

“When the hurricane hit, I received so many messages from my coworkers—doctors, PAs, HR, you name it—asking, ‘What do you need? How can we help?’ That’s when I knew this wasn’t just a workplace. This was more like a family.”
